The SP 120-SC class represented the largest whaleback oil tenders ever used by Southern Pacific and were originally constructed to accompany the railroad’s early AC-class Cab Forwards. With massive oil capacity and a distinctive rounded “whaleback” profile, these tenders were purpose-built for heavy mountain service and long runs through SP’s demanding operating territory.

As newer tenders entered service, the 120-SC tenders were reassigned to other heavy power, including Mikados, Decapods, and other road locomotives, where their large capacity kept them useful and their higher visibility liked by crews. Their reassignment makes them a versatile choice for modeling later steam eras.

This N-scale kit faithfully reproduces the 120-SC tender’s imposing size and unique shape in high-resolution resin, offering an accurate and visually striking option for Southern Pacific modelers.

A note about design: after the initial product photos were taken, it was noticed that the cut lever was missing from the rear of the locomotive, and has been rectified, but additional photos have not been taken yet. We have included a screenshot from the CAD render showing the corrected cut lever.

Assembly Notes
