From 1915 until his retirement in 1947, he became a Peninsula institution.

Passengers trusted him implicitly. He safeguarded coats and luggage, shepherded unaccompanied children between cities, remembered regulars’ preferences, and ensured that every traveler arrived composed and cared for. In an era when racial prejudice and segregation were entrenched realities in American life, Millet—a Black railroad employee—earned universal admiration from passengers, civic leaders, and company officials alike. Not a single complaint was ever filed against him in more than four decades of service.

When he retired, Monterey citizens successfully urged Southern Pacific to honor him by naming parlor-buffet lounge car SP 2946 in his memory. The car—rebuilt from a 1913–14 Harriman baggage-club car into a 75-foot 75-CS-2 class lounge—featured easy chairs, buffet service, air conditioning, and radio, and remained on the Del Monte until 1961.

In all of Southern Pacific history, SP 2946 was the only car named for an employee.
